Changes in surfaces
Watch for swollen baseboards, bubbling paint, soft drywall, staining, warped flooring or cabinet materials that begin to separate. These signs do not prove the cause by themselves, but they can justify a closer look.
Unusual odors or dampness
Persistent damp or musty odors can indicate a moisture issue somewhere in the building. The goal is to locate the moisture source rather than masking the odor.
Water appearing away from the source
Water follows openings, slopes and building materials. A roof or plumbing leak can show up in a different room or lower level from where it began.
